Town Center, Lod
The project was carried out as a part of the general renewal of Lod's center, "Lev Lod", in the framework of the Ministry of Housing and Construction and Lod Municipality's project renewal.
The site plan targets a triangle of streets: Hanassi, Gertbol and Shaul HaMelech - each edge constitutes an axis of urban activity. A significant spot is situated at each point:
- The central urban square – Commando Square – home to the municipal building as well as to residential and commercial structures. The site plan suggests the addition of stories to the square's buildings.
- The square at the entrance to the town, a city gate, etc.
- A commercial square.
One of the triangle's edges is Gertbol St., which constitutes the meeting point of old residential buildings and commercial spaces and newer housing.
The primary efforts were invested in the definition and design of the pedestrian zone as an urban space. A three-dimensional construction was planned for the "façade-less" parts of the street. A commercial colonnade was designed for the street's center, along an existing facade of shops. The three dimensional construction and colonnade display a uniform architectural language.
The materials used are silicate bricks and smooth plaster that match the adjacent buildings.
The planning further includes a full renovation of the street's facade.
The project was carried out in cooperation with architect Danny Lazar.
